Samsung’s “Secret Color” phone: shh, don’t tell anyone the keypad doesn’t match

When you’ve finally exhausted the entire spectrum of colors for your phone models ranging from the subdued to the wild, what’s the next frontier? Mixing and matching, of course. Samsung’s so-called “Secret Color” SPH-W3600 and SCH-W360 sliders for the Korean market look like factory seconds — manufacturing mistakes that accidentally found their way into the public domain — and with most products, you’d expect such buffoonery to warrant a discount. Not so here, though: the limited-edition models will run between 500,000 and 600,000 won (about $530 to $635), though we suppose the haptic keypads and 7.2Mbps download speeds at least partially justify the cash outlay.

Motorola and Samsung steal Smartphone market from HTC?

Although Motorola’s market share has been steadily sliding to the delight of Nokia and Samsung, DigiTimes would have you believe that Moto reigns supreme in the global Windows Mobile Smartphone segment. Citing “internal data from Microsoft,” the oft-wrong, occasionally correct tattle-rag claims that HTC’s share of the WinMo Standard space has declined leaving Moto with the largest market share — beating Samsung by, “a small margin.” This after HTC saw a 50% Smartphone domination during Microsoft’s Jul 2006 - Jul 2007 fiscal year. HTC still maintains a 50% market share for WinMo Professional touch-screen devices. Of course, this could be true. After all, Moto has refocused their attention to high-margin, full-featured handsets at the expense of emerging markets and entry level yawners. And you can’t swing an HTC Vox without knocking over a dozen Qs. Still, until we hear otherwise, take this rumor with a quarry-sized load of rock salt.

Patent granted on smartphones, everyone sued

What would you do if the US patent office gave you the go-ahead on a far-reaching, non-specific application filed for a “mobile entertainment and communication device”? If your answer was that you would immediately draw up lawsuits against almost every major electronics manufacturer that even looked at a smartphone funny, you get a cookie. Yes folks, as impossible as it is to believe, the holders of the aforementioned patent have just sued Apple, Nokia, RIM, Sprint, AT&T, HP, Motorola, Helio, HTC, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcomm, and Samsung… amongst others. So eager was this company to sue, in fact, that legal papers were filed a day before the patent was granted, and subsequently had to re-submitted. The real sucker-punch here is that the patent simply combines a list of prior technologies jumbled into one product, a practice which has recently been ruled against by the Supreme Court. Still, we doubt it will stop the holders from trying to nab a few dollars in settlements, staying the work of real innovators, and generally making a mockery of our patent system. Bravo!

The L may or not be for L’Amour: Samsung’s L310 and L320

Samsung has busted out two decidedly fashion-friendly flips for eastern European countries, the L310 (left) and L320 (right). In fact, they’re so fashion-friendly that Samsung says they’re specifically targeted at women. The EDGE data and tri-band GSM radios aren’t going to impress anyone, but we suppose those fancy frills just might — maybe even fancy enough to garner some attention from Nokia. Both feature a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and microSD expansion, while the L320 ups the ante with an actual external display (imagine that!). You also get built-in calorie counter and perfume recommendation apps, though we’re not so sure we’d trust our phones to tell us what we should smell like. The L310 will retail for about €220 ($319) and the L320 for about €240 ($348) when they go on sale next month.

Alltel’s emphasizing the cool, fashion-friendly, stylish side of the three phones it’s officially announcing today. Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for Samsung BlackJack hits today

After having given its newer BlackJack II cousin plenty of breathing room in the WinMo 6 spotlight, Samsung’s finally doubling back to bring the original up to spec. No, seriously: as of 5PM Eastern Time today, you’ll be able to hit the attached link and download Windows Mobile 6 (an official ROM, finally) for your old-skool BlackJack in all its glory. For folks not in need of the II’s GPS, the upgrade should breathe new life into a handset that still holds its own in the smartphone pack, and for some time now, has been just one small upgrade away from avoiding the proverbial glue factory. Let us know how it goes, updaters!

Note: Prior to 5PM EST, you’ll be redirected to an old Windows Mobile 5 update for the phone. Hang tight, folks!

Samsung U550 for Verizon in pictures

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard what’s up with the Samsung U550, successor to the U540 and little cuz to the magnificently… uh, gleamy U700 Gleam. Don’t fret, though; turns out it’s still in the mix and tracking for a release in the not-too-distant future. Our tipster points out that the new model fixes a niggle with the U540 — a strangely shaped d-pad — and may feature a 2 megapixel camera. Stay tuned!

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Samsung’s first Sprint Direct Connect phone wafts in via FCC

Seems a bit odd seeing a rugged, PTT-centric phone on Sprint Nextel that isn’t getting sourced out of Motorola’s ranks, doesn’t it? Indeed, get used to it — this here is a phone supporting Qualcomm’s QChat protocol, the CDMA-based push-to-talk standard that Sprint will be phasing in as iDEN dies a long, slow death. The Samsung Z400 (not to be confused with the phone of champions) clearly takes a page out of Motorola’s book, though, by gearing up with plenty of rubber bits, so even if it ends up not being particularly rugged, it’ll certainly look the part. It also features a media player, camera, Bluetooth, and support for some sort of “chat and dating” service (seriously, look it up in the manual!) so we have some hope that adding some manufacturers to the Direct Connect ranks is going to spice things up a bit. No word yet on when this one might launch.
