T-Mobile goes national with HotSpot @Home WiFi calling
Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Samsung, T-Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE
Following a limited launch last year in its hometown of Seattle, T-Mobile’s finally pulling all the stops and taking its “HotSpot @Home” hybrid GSM / WiFi calling service national. A first among the US’ big four carriers, @Home relies on traditional cell airwaves out in the field but switches seamlessly to WiFi when it gets within range of a T-Mobile hotspot or any other wireless router you’ve configured your phone to latch onto. For the millions of us with less-than-stellar reception in our homes, the service could be a life-saver — and even better, WiFi minutes aren’t deducted from your plan. Launch handsets are the Nokia 6086 and Samsung t409, both of which will go out the door for $49.99 on contract and include a Linksys or D-Link router — both specially designed for @Home service — for free after rebate, though any 802.11b access point should work. The service itself will run $9.99 per month on individual and $19.99 on family plans for up to five handsets. Look for the equipment today in T-Mobile stores and on the carrier’s website.

Samsung’s sorta-retro S480
The “classic” Samsung SGH-E700 (T-Mobile subscribers will remember it as the SGH-E715) really doesn’t bring the fond memories flooding over us the same way, say, a StarTAC might. That’s not a knock on the Samsung — far from it, in fact — but let’s be honest, 2007 might be a bit soon to be drawing design inspiration from a phone originally released in 2003. Anyway, that’s not stopping Samsung from following Motorola’s footsteps and playing the retro card, rehashing the E700 as the SCH-S480 and SPH-S4850 in Korea. Besides exchanging GSM for CDMA radios, the new models upgrade their cams from VGA to 1.3 megapixels, come in a handful of color combos, and add in your typical 2007 amenities like media playback. Look for it to run 300,000 won (about $323) unsubsidized on your Korean carrier of choice.

Samsung SGH-F210
Samsung has introduced their new and slim music player phone SGH-F210 in Singapore last week. Similar to Samsung X830, the Samsung SGH-F210 is a music player phone with slim body design. This small device carries the narrow spinner design seen on select other Samsung models for the Asian market, and when closed looks far […]

Hey Motorola, just because you snapped it doesn’t mean you broke it.

AT&T’s busy launch roster (and no, we don’t mean the iPhone)
Filed under: Handsets, LG, Motorola, Samsung, ATT, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
A trusted source has slipped us some 411 that should be music to the ears of anyone on AT&T that isn’t getting an iPhone. Believe it or not, AT&T hasn’t forsaken you — in fact, the network’s upcoming launches are looking very promising indeed. From Samsung we’ll see the A537 “Lion” and A737 “Peridot,” and while we don’t have any intel on what these might be, the A537 should reveal itself no later than August and the A737 may be an ultra-thin 3G slider to accompany the A717 and A727 flip and candybar. From Motorola, the RAZR 2 V9 is apparently in AT&T’s sights — if you hear AT&T employees discussing “Wildcat,” this is the phone they’re referring to — while the V3xx gets yet another color: bubblegum pink. Finally, LG chimes in with the CU575 (a phone we saw way back at Spring CTIA) and the CE110. Stay tuned for details as we get ‘em!
